On Wednesday, May 20, 2015 The Salmagundi Club, in partnership with The Clark Hulings Foundation For Visual Artists, presented Fresh Perspectives on Collecting Art: A Panel Discussion for Collectors and Art Professionals. Peter Trippi, editor-in-chief of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, moderated the panel. Panelists included Jack Esterson AIA, Collector and Principal, Think! Architecture & Design pllc; Shelley Farmer, Director, Hirschl & Adler Modern; Megan McCarthy, Ph.D., Major Gifts Officer, Museum of Modern Art; and Tim Newton, Collector & Salmagundi Club Chairman of the Board.
The goal of this panel discussion was to give art lovers valuable strategies and inspiration to enhance their collections. The panel discussion included a range of topics, including: where to find more of the art you like, how much money to spend, how to manage and care for your collection, and related issues such as lending to museum exhibitions, and engaging with other collectors and the media.
You don’t have to be rich or well connected to build a collection of great contemporary representational art. For example, Tim educated himself on art-buying and started his collection by attending an art festival fundraiser for the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. Also, 70% – 80% of Jack’s art collection was bought from friends. “Friendships and relationships…[are] essential”, said Jack. Searching for a new artist to add to your collections can be overwhelming; you can go to a fair, gallery, artist studio, or various other venues.
