On Our Easel – October 24, 2016

Here are some of the things that have been on CHF’s easel over the past few weeks:

The Young Art Historian by Ryan S. Brown

  • DOWN WITH DEPENDENCY! “We must overwrite years of negative programming designed to convince [artists] that they’re incapable of managing their businesses,” writes CHF Director Elizabeth Hulings. In her latest Director’s View column, Elizabeth  explains why CHF is built on a model that puts artists in charge of their own careers.
  • CHF INTERVIEWS ROBERT C. JACKSON. In a recent conversation with CHF Editorial Director Sofia Perez, the contemporary realist painter shared his thoughts on today’s art industry, and marveled at how many artists still view financial success as a taboo subject. Read what else Bob had to say about the business of art.
  • ON OUR PODCAST. Recent episodes of The Thriving Artist Podcast featured painter Ryan S. Brown, a CHF grant finalist who established his own school of naturalist painting, and sculptor Sabin Howard, a member of the winning design team for the National WWI Memorial in Washington DC’s Pershing Square Park. Ryan discussed using social media as a tool for sharing his perspective on his work, while Sabin encouraged his peers to change their attitude toward business. “There is a creative aspect to entrepreneurship that I really wish more artists could see,” says Sabin. Explore the full menu of insightful podcast courses in our Learning Portal.
  • THE ROLE OF THE ART FAIR. A new installation by two of our Business Accelerator Fellows looks at the impact of art fairs on the environment and how art is consumed. Read more about Ghost of a Dream’s When the Smoke Clears: A Fair Housing Project, which will be at Brooklyn’s Smack Mellon until October 30th.
  • A WINDING PATH GETS YOU THERE FASTER. Financial expert Elaine Grogan Luttrull explores the implications of a new study on career mobility. For artists and CEOs alike, the shortest route to success might not be a straight line.
