Laura Petrovich-Cheney: Piece by Piece

In ‘Piece by Piece’, Laura Petrovich-Cheney notes that “nothing lasts forever” through wooden quilts created from the debri collected after Hurricane Sandy, a natural disaster that devastated Laura’s own family and community. Inspired by the geometry of American quilts, using recurrent block patterns as a metaphor for the repetition of life — birth, growth, death and regeneration — she turned those scraps into art. With each piece, Laura undertakes the task of rebuilding out of loss and brokenness inspired by the time-honored tradition of American quiltmaking.

The result, “Piece by Piece” is on exhibit at the Salisbury University Art Galleries Downtown Campus from January 15-February 25. A reception is 5-8 p.m. January 15 during the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District Committee’s monthly 3rd Friday celebration. An artist talk is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 25.

Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturdays. Sponsored by SU Art Galleries, admission is free and the public is invited. Petrovich-Cheney was awarded a Business Accelerator Grant from the Clark Hulings Foundation for Visual Artists to support the exhibit.
