Bee Ottinger

Barbara “Bee” Ottinger is a world renowned pioneer in video editing. She invented modern editing to music—quick cuts, jump cuts, visual effects, nonlinear montage—which is now the ubiquitous visual language used in commercials and music videos. She was the first to use Avid for music videos. Her familiar style can be seen in her work for MTV Networks in videos featuring Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson, and a host of other artists. She founded Skylight Productions, acquired by Mad River Post, and was head of the National Avid User Group.

Ottinger is a champion of the democratization of video editing, and has a network of relationships in music and entertainment. Her popularization of digital messaging using sound and video has hit the global marketplace—just as video’s accessibility on mobile platforms and social networking is skyrocketing. Ottinger has poured her expertise into SnapCuts; her unique approach to editing is the bedrock of SnapCuts’ proprietary applications. A series of tutorials, “The Visual Language of Editing,” which she has taught at venues such as Middlebury College, are augmented by input from her award-winning peers, top-tier artists, and producers in film and video editing.
